simon says stamp monday challenge: a new start

Hi all and welcome to another week on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. Thank you for playing along with us last week in the  challenge and we hope you will join us again this week too :) 

Happy New Year everyone! This week our challenge is A New Start and I have created a fun New Year's Card for you using the Tim Holtz Santa Greetings set. I used the word banner from this set to create a festive New Year's banner, and cut my letters and banner from silver and gold metallic kraft stock. The design team is using products from Brutus Monroe and I used some of the Gilded Shimmer Splash as splatter on the background of my card. To finish my card, I added a ton of tiny stars in metallic and black to make the card pop that I cut from the Falling Stars dies.

Hi all and welcome to another week on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. Thank you for playing along with us last week in the  challenge and we hope you will join us again this week too :) 

This week our challenge is Christmas and I have combined the Tim Holtz Sizzix Trim A Tree along with the Winter Woodlands stamps to create this colorful rainbow tree tag.

I tried to take some step by step photos this week in case you want to follow along! 


Step 1: Cut some panels of Distress Watercolor Cardstock. Inside of a Splat Box, spray them with Distress Mica Stains and let dry or dry with a heat tool. 


Step 2: Lay out all the pieces for each tree, and ink the edges with a contrasting color of Distress Ink. I'll share all the colors I used below. 


Step 3: To create smaller trees just "trim" the tree under the score line on the more solid images. See Tim's You Tube on how to do this over on his video (about min 24:40) in the video. 

Step 4: To get the edges of those layers extra inky, slide a piece of scrap paper underneath while you are inking :) Then adhere all your tree pieces together. 


Step 5: Colors to shade edges: Picked Raspberry, Ripe Persimmon, Fossilized Amber, Rustic Wilderness 

Step 6: Colors to shade edges: Lucky Clover, Uncharted Mariner, Dusty Concord

Step 7: Stamp background stamp from Rustic wilderness onto a 3 3/4 x 6 panel using Pumice Stone Distress Oxide. 

Step 8: Emboss image using Pumice Stone Distress Embossing Glaze and emboss with embossing heat tool. Repeat two more times so you have 3 of these panels. 

Step 9: Create woodgrain panels for your background (I did this but in the end found it was not necessary because it all got covered up). Cut woodgrain paper into 1 1/2 inch strips and ink the edges, then cover your medium Etcetera Tag. 

Step 10: Trim excess off of tag, sand edges with a sanding disk to make them smooth and ink the outside edges of your tag with Pumice Stone Distress Ink.

Step 11: Spray the embossed panels with Pumice Stone Distress Spray Stain and let dry or dry with heat tool. 

Step 12: Add stands to bottom of trees (I sprayed mine with Pumice Stone Distress Spray Stain and Frozen Fog Distress Mica Stain). 

Step 13: Add panels to tag...one will hang off. Stamp and emboss sentiment from Winter Woodlands and add to tag. 

Step 15: Adhere trees to panel. I used super sticky foam dots. 

Step 16: Add Hardware Heads colored with Mushroom Alcohol Ink to panels, Add Snowfall Grit Paste to bottom of panels using a palette knife and then splatter the entire tag with Sterling Foundry Wax, being careful to avoid your sentiment (I covered mine up while splattering). Let the whole thing dry completely and hang it up to enjoy some holiday cheer!

new tim holtz distress: mini distress archival inks + distress embossing glaze

Were you able to catch the Tim Holtz You Tube live today featuring the new Mini Distress Archival Ink and Distress Embossing Glaze colors? I am so excited as always to add any new colors of Distress to my stash!!! All of these new products are available to order at Simon Says Stamp and are shipping now. 

One of the cards I created with the new Distress Embossing Glaze uses what I call my Distress Embossing Glaze papers...I like to take small pieces of paper that will fit through my Sizzix Sidekick and emboss them each with a different color of glaze. For this card, I used Distress Embossing Glaze on Distress White Heavystock in Picked Raspberry, Wild Honey, Salty Ocean and Wilted Violet.

Then I used the new Sizzix Stacked Tiles Hearts dies to cut a bunch of hearts out from each color of paper. I also used a sentiment from the Bold Text 1 dies on this slimline card. 


To put it all together, I cut the Love You out 3 times and stacked it to add a little dimension. Then I added on the glaze hearts, some right to the card panel and others with some foam tape to make them really pop. I love the texture and shine that these glazes give to die cut shapes. To complete the panel, I inked the edges with Black Soot Distress Ink, then adhered the panel to a card base with foam tape. Perfect for Valentine's Day or to say I love you any time of the year!

tim holtz sizzix: leaf fragments

Hi there crafty friends! Remember these fall leaves I made a while back...these Leaf Fragments dies were part of the Tim Holtz Sizzix Halloween release and I turned them into a small Etcetra tag that is perfect to add to your fall decor! Today, I am sharing a little tutorial on how I created this tag and a few of my favorite tips and tricks for creating these fall leaves that would be great on so many projects, I made an entire bowl of them and am happy to have some left over for a few quick fall cards. 

To create this small Etcetera tag, I began by covering it with a piece of paper from the Backdrops Idea-ology paper pack. We are going to cover most of it up, but I like to know that there is a layer of text under there. Pick one of the more lighter, neutral colored pieces of paper and cover up as much as you like. I used Distress Collage Medium and a Collage brush to adhere my paper to a Small Etcetera tag. There will be some overhang, but we will fix that after it dries. Once the paper is dry, turn your tag over and cut off any excess with a craft knife. Make sure to do this on a surface that is safe to cut on :) 


Next, you are going to want to paint the paper on your tag. I used Distress Paints in mostly Antique Linen, but then added a bit of Rusty Hinge and Hickory Smoke to give it a bit of depth, sprayed it with water using the Distress Sprayer and then added another layer of paint until I achieved the look I wanted. 


Now onto the leaves! Before we get started I want you to notice that all my leaves have multiple colors in them. I cut a bunch of leaves from Distress Mixed Media Heavystock. I recommend making a big batch of leaves at once so you have them for all your fall projects. I took out a few of my favorite fall colors of regular Distress Spray Stain (See them in the supply list below) and my Distress Mica Stains. Don't forget to shake your Mica Stains well so the mica is not all on the bottom while you are using them, and I keep them lying down while I use them so I have less shaking to do. 

I created a batch of each color (yellow, orange, green, purple, brown and dark red). I sprayed a batch of the leaves that I placed inside a Splat Box with water using my DIstress Sprayer and then added colors by color family. I sprayed the leaves with water, then Distress Spray Stain and Distress Mica Spray in the same color family. Once the leaves were dry, I gave them a very light spray with a different color of the Distress Mica Stain. Keep in mind, the further away you hold the sprayer, the smaller the drops will be. 


Once all of my leaves were dry, I inked the edges with Black Soot DIstress Ink using a foam blending tool. This definitely makes them pop. Then I gently bent the leaves in half without giving them an actual crease to mimic real leaves. On some of the leaves I bent the tips backward or forward so they looked more organic. 


To finish the tag, I stamped the sentiment from the Handwritten Thoughts set in Black Soot Archival Distress Ink. Then I placed the leaves onto the tag where I thought I would like to place them. I added some of the leaves onto the tag flat using Collage Medium, and for the others I used super sticky foam squares to hold them onto my project. As the final touch, I added some more light splatter of the Distress Mica Stains over the entire project using a paintbrush that I dipped into the bottle of stain. Don't forget to put your caps back on tightly when you are done doing this.

Hi crafty friends, welcome to this week's Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge! Thank you for joining us us for last week's Play with Paint Challenge, and we hope you will join us again this week for the Early Birds Challenge. This week our challenge is Early Birds and we are challenging you to add a feathered friend or maybe you could interpret the theme as an early morning sunrise, or maybe you can think of something else!

Today, I used one of my FAVORITE new birds...the Tim Holtz Sizzix Colorize Arthur. This guy is one of the new Sizzix Seasonal dies for Halloween, but I can tell he is going to be a favorite all year long. To create Arthur, I took the die out of the packages and separated the dies by color family. If you have not used Colorize dies before, they are etched with the colors and a number on the back of the die. For instance, Arthur has Purple 1, Purple 2...all the way through 5 because he is purple on the packaging. I just substituted blues for my card (and a bit of brown). But cutting and laying ALL your pieces out in advance really makes it easy to assemble. There is a great video on the Sizzix You Tube channel as well to help you assemble him. 

 

I cut all of the pieces for Arthur and layered him together. Then I assembled him, one of my new favorite tools to use to pick up and layer the tiny little pieces is the Studio Katia embellishment wand...it has just the right amount of 'stick' to pick up the tiny pieces and layer them onto each other. I bought a white replacement tip just to make sure color did not get onto my card pieces. For the branches, I cut them out of Tim Holtz Woodgrain Cardstock and sprayed the bigger branch with Gathered Twigs Distress Spray stain and the smaller with a combo of Antique Linen and Brushed Corduroy Distress Spray Stains. I also used the spectacles from the Santa's Wish die and cut them out of Metallic cardstock. 

 

Once Arthur was assembled, I cut the Falling Stars die out of yellow cardstock and then adhered it to a black mat using foam tape. Once that was done, I adhered it to a black cardstock mat, then adhered Arthur and the branches and added a Big Talk Snarky Sticker to complete the card.
